Shokz OpenRun vs. Apple AirPods

Shokz OpenRun vs. Apple Airpods Review

If you're reading this, you are probably trying to decide which pair to buy, the Shokz OpenRun or the Apple Airpods. While both are lightweight, there are many differences to consider. Despite the fact that the Shokz OpenRun rest on your temples, outside of your ears, whereas Apple Airpods sit inside of your ear, people often compare and shop between these two styles since they are both very lightweight.

In the following review I will go into detail on each model to help you make a choice. Each style has its advantages and disadvantages, so hopefully the following in depth review will help you make the right choice based on your preferences.

Read on for my Shokz vs. Apple Airpods review. If you don’t have time to read it all, click here to skip to the bottom to see who won.

How do the Shokz work?

If you were wondering how can you hear music from headphones that don't go in or on your ear, it is thru a recent technology called bone conduction.

Shokz OpenRun play music thru a combination of sound waves and vibration, while resting on the sides of your face or temples.

The huge benefit to these is that you can enjoy your music without sacrificing safety. Essentially, you gain more awareness of your surroundings, and you risk arguably less hearing damage as well (note: not scientifically proven, but as a personal observation only).

Moreover, this design also means that anytime someone interrupts you to ask a question, you don't have to pull your headphones off to hear or answer the question!

Bone conduction allows you to still hear and respond to directional noise, even though it will mostly block out any non-directional noise. For example, if someone at the gym asks you how many sets you have left, you can answer without having to take off your earbuds.

However, you can still primarily enjoy your music and drown out non-directional sound. For example, the annoyingly chatty group "working out" nearby you will be mostly drowned out by your music.

How loud do the Shokz get?

First off, the Shokz OpenRun models can reach maximum sensitivity of 105 dB. Although the open ear design will make it noticeably less loud than competing models, the trade off is that you will experience less ear ringing after prolonged usage, and it is easier to communicate spontaneously, as needed.

I mostly tested these in a noisy gym or weight room environment. I found that the volume level was loud enough to enjoy my music and drown out most background noise, unless directly spoken to.

You may also notice louder impacts around you more, such as the clanging of weights. But higher frequency sound is mostly drowned out, which is good.

How good is the Shokz OpenRun sound quality?

Being these are open ear designs you will never consider these in the same tier as a top performing sound quality headphones, however, considering their design type, they're actually pretty impressive. Plus, as I mentioned in the previous section, you'll primarily want these due to the other benefits they provide, and the sound quality becomes less of a primary factor in that case.

Keep in mind you're playing music thru bone conduction rather than close to or inside your ear canal, so the listening environment will not be fully optimal. However, I want to emphasize that the end result is still very good, all things considered.

How do the Apple Airpods work?

You simply stick both earpods inside your ear, after pairing it to your audio device, and enjoy the music. No wires or control box required.

In fact, you can even listen to one earpod at a time if you need to be aware of your surroundings.

For example, in some states it is illegal to have both headphones on while driving, so you may want to only leave one in while you drive. This is also useful to do in precarious situations, such as when you jog or bike thru a busy city street.

How loud do the Apple Airpods get?

As compared to the Shokz OpenRun, the Apple Airpods are louder since they fit snug inside your ear canal.

However, there is still some leakage. In terms of noise cancellation, these are not as good as wearing a pair of over ear headphones, but considering the sleek design, they do a pretty good job in loud environments.

How good is the Apple Airpods sound quality?

In my opinion, the sound quality is good, but to be honest, they sound no different than any other average pair of headphones on the market. The bass is pretty good, but I wasn't really blown away by the sound quality.

Of course, you are buying these because they're incredibly small, lightweight and fully wireless. Sound quality and loudness take a backseat when considering the functionality of these headphones.

Shokz OpenRun vs. Apple Airpods Side-by-Side Comparison

Category Shokz OpenRun Apple Airpods
Loudness Loud enough to drown out background noise but open ear design will allow you to hear directional sound; for spontaneous direct conversation this is a plus Louder than Shokz, but open fit means they are also not one of the loudest pair of headphones on the market
Sound Quality Adequate but not the best due to open ear design Not spectacular due to open design
Eardrum Friendly Less ear ringing, seems like it was better for my eardrums Embeds inside of the ear canal, caused more ear ringing and fatigue
Comfort Extremely lightweight and fit right over my ears, forgot they were there Super lightweight, but I got sick of having them wedged in my ears
Brand Shokz is the #1 Bone Conduction brand Apple is of course a top brand, but hard to find these online unless you shop direct

What’s the right pair of headphones for you? Shokz OpenRun or Apple Airpods?

So the big question, are the Shokz OpenRun or the Apple Airpods the right pair of headphones for you?

After thorough tests on both of these headphones, the winner for me is the Shokz OpenRun. Overall, I feel that these headphones are close in sound, but the Shokz OpenRun adds more value to the earbud listening experience. I would recommend the Shokz OpenRun to anyone who falls into the following categories:

  • Be Aware: If you exercise outdoors or on city streets, the OpenRun open ear design is invaluable since you can still hear around you when needed. It's also great when someone asks you how many sets have left in the gym, you can respond without having to pull out your earphones.
  • Less Ear Discomfort: Even when I wore these for long periods, I noticed my ears would not ring as much as they would when wearing other bluetooth headphones.

In general, I would recommend the Shokz OpenRun to most people. With that being said, there are some situations in which the Apple Airpods might be a better option for you:

  • Play it Louder  – if you really don't want to hear your surroundings, these are definitely louder since they are right inside your ear. You won't hear as much surrounding noise as you will with the Shokz.
  • Smallest Size Possible – Apple Airpods are literally the smallest sized headphones you can buy since they are about the size of earplugs. If you are really into the minimalist look, they definitely capture that, being that they hang from the inside of your ear.
