NormaTec 2.0 vs. Rapid Reboot Review

If you're reading this, you are probably trying to decide which of these two air compression devices to buy, as they are the most popular in the category. You've landed on the right page, as I have done extensive testing on both of these recovery systems, using them on myself and others for several months.

Both of these air compression massage systems provide a similar style of treatment. However, they have their own pros and cons of which I will detail below, in the hopes that it will help you decide which one might be the best device for you.

NormaTec Pulse 2.0 Review

What is new about the NormaTec Pulse 2.0?

The NormaTec Pulse 2.0 is the first leg recovery system to be fully integrated with Bluetooth. The Bluetooth enabled app allows you to control and adjust the massage settings using your smart phone, and it also allows you to track and store your session information.

I can't emphasize enough about how much I enjoyed being able to use my phone as a remote control to adjust the massager's settings during a session. Instead of having to reach and perhaps even strain yourself to adjust your session, you simply use your phone. When you are wearing inflatable boots, the last thing you want to do is to have to get up and touch a screen in order to change a setting. With the NormaTec Pulse 2.0, you don't have to!

The ability to access your session data is great for spotting trends ranging from your overall well being to your athletic performance. For example, you can record what days and weeks you used it on versus the days and weeks you did not (session frequency), as well as for how long you used it for (session length), and what settings you used it on (session intensity).

Power Rating

First of all, the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 is pretty powerful. According to NormaTec, it can reach up to 110mmHg. While I did not attempt to measure the power generated, in laymen's terms, it provides an impressive amount of squeeze, so much so that I did not need to go past level 4, even though it provides up to 7 levels of intensity. In my personal experience, Level 4 was plenty enough, and for those keeping score at home, I am 6 feet 180 lbs.

Secondly, Level 4 provides a nice amount of pressure, of which I would equate to receiving a sports massage. Immediately after a 30 minute session, my legs felt much fresher while standing up and walking around.

In addition, I noticed that if I used the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 even the night before game day, that my on-court performance and activity levels increased the next day, thanks to my legs being fresher.

Battery Life

Most of all, the nice thing about the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 is it does not need to be plugged in, as it actually has an internal battery that stores charge. This means as long as you charge the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 main box periodically, you will be able to take it on the go or use it outside, without the need of an outlet.

Session Length Options

First off, you can adjust the session length for a NormaTec Leg Pulse 2.0 Recovery system from 10 minutes, all the way up to 2 hours and 55 minutes. Most importantly, that means the longest session length option is more than 5X of its nearest competitors, making this the standout feature of the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 in the air compression category.

Furthermore, the longer session option is especially useful since you will probably have your feet elevated and find yourself wanting to doze off while it does the work.

For instance, if you need to receive a longer treatment session, you can actually just relax and let it do its work, since you won't need to continually restart the device to continue the session.

Rapid Reboot Review

Power Rating

Firstly, the Rapid Reboot system advertises a maximum level of 200mmHg. In fact, you can adjust between 10 levels from 20mmHg all the way up to the top level of 200mmHg. To be frank, 200mmHg seems like solely a marketing move ("we are the more powerful air compression machine.")

Moreover, I did not find it very practical to go past 60 mmHg, and can't imagine going past 110mmHg and I consider myself an advanced athlete. For reference purposes, I am a very active 30 year old man with no health problems.

With that being said, the option to go higher is there for those who would like the option to go past 110mmHg.

Battery Life

While the NormaTec can be used without an outlet, the Rapid Reboot must always be plugged in, as it does not have an internal battery. This means you will not be able to take it on the go or use it outside, you will always need an outlet to use it.

Rapid Reboot

Session Length Options

The Rapid Reboot offers three session options, which are in the following increments: 10 minute, 20 minute or 30 minute sessions.

As I am used to needing longer sessions, I did find it slightly annoying having to start the next session every time a 30 minute session ended. In fact, this especially stood out to me after having tested the NormaTec and enjoying their longer sessions.

What’s the right recovery system for you? NormaTec or RapidReboot?

So the big question, is NormaTec Pulse 2.0 or Rapid Reboot the right recovery system for you?

After thorough tests on both of these air compression systems, the winner for me is the NormaTec Pulse 2.0. Overall, I feel the NormaTec Pulse 2.0 is hands down the superior recovery system and well worth the money. I would recommend the NormaTec recovery device to anyone who falls into the following categories:

  • Now with Bluetooth: NormaTec has Bluetooth, and the competition doesn't. The Bluetooth enabled app allows you to control the device remotely making it easier to adjust settings while using it. The app allows you to form a better understanding of correlations between your recovery program and performance, giving it another big edge.
  • Extended Sessions: The NormaTec has inspired some copycats, but one of the other major things that separates it from the rest are the incredible session length options. You can choose between countless session time increments.
  • Luxury Feel, Premium Product that the Pros Use: When you try and feel the product you will understand why the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA and the Navy Seals approve of and use the NormaTec. Again, as compared to its copycats, it just has the feel of being in a luxury car vs. a non-name brand, in terms of both its feel and in the bells and whistles and level of performance that it offers.
  • Fully and Truly Portable: With the NormaTec having a built in battery that lasts 6 hours, you can easily take this to athletic events or when traveling without being stuck using an outlet. At 3.5 lbs, it's also 27% lighter than before.
  • Superior Sequential Pressure: The air chambers work in cohesion and without any friction, unlike cheaper knockoffs. It pushes air in a perfect relay race up your legs to pump out all of the unwanted lactic acid.
