TriggerPoint GRID VIBE PLUS vs. Hyperice Vyper 3.0

TriggerPoint GRID VIBE PLUS vs. Hyperice Vyper 3.0 Review

If you're trying to decide between the GRID VIBE PLUS and the Hyperice Vyper 3.0, you're in the right place. I have used both for the past few months and have tried them with athletes at our local Recovery Zone events.

Each of these foam rollers are excellent in their own right and are from reputable brands. As with anything, they each have their own pluses and minuses, so I will go over these in my review to help you choose which one will work best for you.

TriggerPoint GRID VIBE PLUS Massager Review

Power Rating

The GRID VIBE PLUS has 4 speed settings, while the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 only has 3 speed settings. Level 1 of the GRID VIBE PLUS is lighter than the Hyperice level 1, while the top level (level 4) of the GRID VIBE PLUS is not as powerful as the top level of the Hyperice Vyper 3.0. That being said, level 3 and 4 of the GRID VIBE PLUS are more than powerful enough and you won't be feeling like you're missing anything, in my experience.

TriggerPoint GRID VIBE Plus

Some studies show that adding vibration is only beneficial up to a certain frequency/power, meaning power isn't everything -- lower levels of vibration are probably sufficient treatment. I like to go off feel too though, and I honestly felt great at level 3 and 4 on the GRID VIBE PLUS, I never felt like I needed more power out of this.

It is nice having 4 speeds to choose from, because some people need the softer level 1 if they are not hugely enamored with the vibration. So I feel TriggerPoint did a good job in setting the range and options for this model.

Firmness

To be blunt, TriggerPoint GRID foam rollers aren't famous for being the most dense, in fact they actually offer an Extra Firm Density GRID roller (non-vibrating) for that very reason. They decided to go with a medium-density style build for their GRID VIBE PLUS vibrating foam roller, unfortunately an extra firm option is not offered for the GRID VIBE PLUS.

It is still plenty firm, especially when used with the vibration, I still felt great after using it. Just don't expect this roller to be as dense of a surface as the Hyperice Vyper 3.0.

The density is still adequate, as I didn't notice any sinkage. For your reference I'm 6 foot 180 lbs, but I would suggest that perhaps larger folks (over 250lbs) might want to consider the firmness when choosing which foam roller is best for them.

Portability

The GRID VIBE PLUS wins hands down in this department, it is one of the smallest and lightest rollers on the market, which I think is smart on TriggerPoint's part -- you will be more likely to take it with you and get use out of it!

All in all, the GRID VIBE PLUS measures in at only 12 inches long and 3.5" in diameter, which is not only great for making it easy to carry around, but TriggerPoint also claims that the smaller diameter results in a more targeted massage. After using it, I have to agree. Compared to bulkier rollers, I felt the smaller surface area enhanced my rolling sessions with its more targeted massage.

Hyperice Vyper 3.0 Review

Power Rating

As mentioned above, the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 only has 3 speed settings as compared to 4 speed settings of the GRID VIBE PLUS. Level 1 of Vyper 3.0 is probably equal to Level 2 of the GRID VIBE PLUS. The top level (level 3) of the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 is stronger than the top level of the GRID VIBE PLUS. Therefore, Hyperice clearly has more powerful vibration force, and maybe the most of any roller on the market.

With that said, I hardly used Level 3, I found Level 1 and 2 much more practical and enjoyable. Most athletes we used it on also stayed at the lower levels.

As I alluded to, certain studies attest to the fact that vibration is only beneficial up to a certain frequency/power anyway, meaning you only need so much power to feel or receive the benefit of vibration. So some of the hype in Hyperice regarding their claim that they made "the most powerful vibrating foam roller" on the market, is well, simply marketing.

I do think NFL and NBA type athletes (and any other large human beings) might appreciate the Level 3 power though. Us mere mortals who tested the Vyper 3.0, did not need 92 Hz, and I think the average person would agree. If you find yourself in the larger side of the spectrum, the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 will be a godsend.

Firmness

The Vyper 3.0 is dense and firm by any foam roller standards, and by vibrating foam roller standards, I think it is the most firm vibrating foam roller that I've ever used.

If you get tight hamstrings, the firmness of a Hyperice Vyper is key, especially if you are a large athlete. At 6 feet and 180 lbs, most foam rollers have too much give for me and do not get the job done. The Hyperice Vyper 3.0 density is much better than most rollers, in regards to its firmness. Again, if you are a larger person, the build size and firmness of the Vyper 3.0 will make a difference for you.

Portability

The Hyperice Vyper 3.0 is not nearly as portable as the Trigger Point GRID VIBE PLUS. It is big by both dimensions and weight standards. It is 13 inches long and 5.4 inches in diameter, and it weighs 2.7 lbs.

Consequentially, I didn't really bring it to the gym much, I mostly used it at home. You would have to be a "duffel bag bro" to be able to bring this one with you places, as it is too big for a standard sized backpack.

What’s the right foam roller for you? GRID VIBE PLUS or Hyperice Vyper 3.0?

So the big question, is the GRID VIBE PLUS or the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 the right foam roller for you?

After thorough tests on both of these massagers the winner for me is the GRID VIBE PLUS. Overall, I feel that the GRID VIBE PLUS is simply the better value. I would recommend the GRID VIBE PLUS foam roller to anyone who falls into the following categories:

  • Portability Matters  You are simply more likely to get more use out of your GRID VIBE PLUS, since it is almost half the dimensional weight of a Hyperice Vyper. You'll actually take it with you to the gym and other places.
  • You would rather spend wisely the GRID VIBE PLUS is literally half the price of Vyper, yet most of its performance specs are right in line with the Vyper, and some factors (portability, number of speed options) are better. With that in mind, it's a better value on paper considering the pricepoints.
  • Under 250 lbs the Hyperice Vyper 3.0's best qualities are its extremely high vibration output of 92 Hz and its extra firm exterior. Most people don't need either, and it is questionable if larger people even need that much vibration to get the benefits of the vibration. The extreme firmness will help larger athletes, though.

In general, I would recommend the GRID VIBE PLUS to most people. With that being said, there are some situations in which the Hyperice Vyper 3.0 might be a better option for you:

  • Enjoy Greater Vibration Intensity – if you are a larger built person or like lots of vibration, the Vyper 3.0 might be the better option because it provides more raw power at 92 Hz.
  • Firmness wins out for you – if you don't mind spending the extra money (2X the GRID VIBE PLUS), you will get a firmer roller for your money.
  • Your Gym Bag is a Big Duffel Bag – If you have the space, then the portability issue goes out the window. Basically for gym bros who take their whole life to the gym, the Vyper 3.0 is perfect -- I kid, only slightly. But seriously, do you need to bring your whole life to the gym, bro?
